My Idea

One thing I think we should talk about is your environment and how it affects your health. We are lucky, because we live near Lake Erie. But there is also a lot of responsibility with having a large water system. We are also near the dividing line of two watersheds. Whatever we do to our lake here, affects two different areas where water flows. Some things we are doing to our water is putting pesticides or fertilzers in it. These chemicals cannot be taken out of the water. Another problem is silt and other kinds of particles that dissolve into the water. Some companies get rid of their waste into the lake, and some of these wastes contain mercury. These three aspects relate to your health because if you eat fish out of Lake Erie, those fish are contaminated with harmful substances. There are restrictions on how much fish you can consume from Lake Erie, because you cannot be exposed to high levels of mercury constantly. This is really affect your health.

Smoking

Just like the Prohibition in the 1920's, a popular substance used by most of the public cannot be illegialized. There will be increased violence, because people have to fight to keep their addiction kept under control. This will also increase the private usage of tobacco, as people will secretly grow it on their own. Each year, about 440,000 Americans were killed due to tobacco, and most began using some form of tobacco before 18.(1) Smoking doesn't just affect you, it also affects the people around you with second-hand smoke. In 2002, 38,000 people reported died because of second hand smoke. It is very difficult to really classify if someone died of second hand smoke or not, because there may be other facotrs as well as the smoking.(2) Another aspect about smoking is the tobacco companies. There have been many advertisements about non-smoking ads that are focused on the tobacco companies. They are making the public realize that tobacco isn't as glamorous as it used to be. It has 250 harmful substances in it, and 50 of those cause cancer.(2) Another reason to quit smoking is that smoking doubles your chance of having a stroke. You are also more likely to develop heart disease.(3)

Drugs

I really don't think drugs should be legialized. This will cause drugs to be more commonly used, and people will think it is okay to use them. All of our nation's years of persistent drug enforcement will be lost, and I don't think we should lose all of tht hard work. But I have to agree that we aren't making too much progress. People that have been using drugs for years continue to use them, yet there are newcomers to drugs everyday. If there are age requirements, people that are under that age limit will ignore it, like other laws. (Such as drinking) I think that awareness of drugs has increased, and we just have to wait a bit to see the effect.
Here's some info about different types of drugs and thier affects.

Bullying

One method of resolving bullying is to tell an adult or teacher. This isn't classified as "tattle talling" or "ratting someone out." By not telling anyone that someone is being bullied, that person may not come to school and fall behind in their school work. About 15% of students being absent is due to bullying(http://www.parentingbookmark.com/pages/articleMB04.htm) If a student being bullyed talks to and adult or teacher, that student can make sure that bully recieves their consequence in a controlled and safe environment.

Vaccinations

I think that, most of the time, vaccinations work. That is what they are meant for. But in some cases, somethings goes wrong. In one case, a woman named Desiree Jennings had the swine flu vaccine and now has a nerve issue. Jennings now cannot walk normally. The only time when she can walk normally is when she is walking backwards, or running. Doctors say that Jennings case was a one in a million possibility, and people shouldn't be worried about this happening to them. This is not a side effect people should worry about. They are worth the risk.

Soy a Superfood?

It seems to me that there isn't a real truth to any of soy's claims. There doesn't seem to be any significant evidence to prove or not prove its greatness. Soy has recently become a popular new health food, but no one seems to know why. It seems to have some negative aspects, including traces of a "cousin" of estrogen. In contrast, Mr. Corbin stated that it has cancer fighting abilities. In my opinion, soy needs to be researched more for people, and myself, to draw a conclusion if it is a healthy choice to eat.
